Wonders of art: from the Romans to the Renaissance

This itinerary is especially recommended for middle and high schools that study art history at a more in-depth level
The guided tour will address various themes such as history, art, religion, iconography, and topography, presented and illustrated by our tour guides in a more educational and less academic way, appropriate to the age of the participants.

Students will learn the importance of iconography in order to recognize the protagonists of works of art, both in the ancient world populated by gods, heroes, and emperors, and in the Renaissance with its famous saints and popes. Ample space will be dedicated to fresco painting, the techniques used by the great masters of the 16th century, and the stylistic analysis of pictorial cycles. Through the scenes and subjects represented, we will learn to understand the value of the image as a propaganda tool, the ideals that circulated within the papal court, and the papacy’s aspirations of grandeur. Finally, we will focus on another artistic genre such as tapestry, present in the Museums with a rich collection.

Guided tour of the Colosseum and Palatine for schools

Entertainment and power in the great monuments of ancient Rome

The guided tour of the Colosseum and Roman Forum designed for schools of all levels will take you to discover the most famous and interesting monuments of ancient Rome. An ideal school trip to learn about some important aspects of Roman society such as: spectacles, pastimes, political institutions, religion, and daily life.

The Colosseum

The guided tour of the Colosseum will be a pleasant and fun opportunity to understand the complex functioning of the largest amphitheater in the ancient world and learn all the details of the spectacular gladiator fights and wild beast hunts.

After passing through one of the ancient entrances to the Colosseum, we will continue along the galleries that will lead us via the staircase ramp to the upper ring. Here a small exhibition will help us understand the sophisticated system of the underground areas where the elevators were operated to bring beasts and scenery to the arena floor. We will also find on display some fragments of the ancient seating, particularly interesting for the graffiti that depict in great detail combat scenes and figures of gladiators. Through various reconstructions, we will learn about the long history of the Colosseum and its different uses that followed over time.

It will then be time to enjoy the view from above of the amphitheater, and delve deeper into the discussion of construction techniques and building secrets, understand the routes and the arrangement of the ancient audience on the seating. Returning to the base level, before leaving the monument, our guide will illustrate a typical day at the Colosseum; drawing on ancient visual sources and the accounts rich in entertaining anecdotes from authors of the past, we will shed light not only on the complex program of the games, but also understand the condition of the arena’s protagonists, the role of spectacles in the ancient world, and finally reveal the various legends born around the Colosseum.

GMI roman Forum

The Palatine

Our trip will continue with entry into the archaeological area of the Palatine and Roman Forum where it will be possible to retrace the entire history of Rome from its foundation to the imperial age.

We will climb the most famous of the 7 hills where students will discover the imposing remains of the imperial palace: the Domus Flavia, the true center of power, from whose halls the emperor administered his immense domain, and the Domus Augustana, where the imperial family lived among splendid gardens, porticoes, and fountains.

You will learn details about the life that took place among the magnificent halls of the palace, which characters frequented them, the refined taste for decorations, and many other curiosities.

Among the most interesting discoveries made on the Palatine is undoubtedly that of the ancient village of Romulus, the first settlement nucleus of the hill, which according to tradition was founded by the first king of Rome in 753 BC. We will therefore retrace the mythical events of the founding of Rome, from the moment the twins were abandoned in the Tiber in a basket, to their rescue by the She-Wolf and the subsequent founding of the city.
